Plans for a massive new recycling plant at the scrap yard off Manchester Road have been passed. Permission was given for the extension at J Doyle’s site by Labour and Tory councillors.
The plans will mean a new building measuring a massive 60 metres long, 25 metres wide and nearly 12 metres high.
The scrap metal dealers who are running the depot admitted when councillors visited the site that there will be at least FIFTEEN vehicles in and out each day.
This means over 9,000 HGV skip wagons extra on Manchester Road over the course of a year. It is expected that this figure will grow.
Labour councillors, including one who lives in Westhoughton, demanded that the new facilities be ready in six months so they could move from their current site in Bolton.
Your two Westhoughton North Tory councillors were at the meeting and said ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about a massive new building, thousands of HGVs, and thousands of tonnes of rubbish being brought to the backyard of the residents they represent.
What use are councillors like these?
Not long ago, Tory councillors voted AGAINST a similar operation in Blackrod but it seems that it is now ok to use Westhoughton as a dumping ground for Bolton’s rubbish.
Your local Lib Dem ward councillor, Derek Gradwell, expressed outrage over the scale of the development, access from the site onto a high speed road and potential increases in traffic movements as a result of the proposed development.

Hi,
I read your piece about the proposed new recycling plant at the scrap yard off Manchester Road. While local people might know where this site is, putting the Post Code in your article, would help people not familiar with the area to see the exact spot to which you refer.
With the spread of the internet, many people use Google Earth to track geographical locations.
BTW – I am living in Somerset, but considering relocating to my birth area – Little Hulton, Bolton.
