A former Market Street snooker club was set alight on Tuesday after it was believed there was a person sleeping rough inside.
Passers-by alerted firefighters who promptly put the fire out before it caused significant damage to the building.
But, the building has been left derelict for many years and ward councillor David Wilkinson is calling for it to be demolished to make way for something new that would be of benefit to the town’s fortunes.
He said: “A derelict building is no good for the town. It was an eyesore before the fire even started. This could be our chance to rejuvenate the site.”
The former snooker club is situated near to The Wheatsheaf pub on Market Street.
