The national supermarket chain LIDL are considering building a new supermarket on the site of Greenfields Private Members’ Club.
The former club, located at the junction of Wigan Road and Cricketers Way, was going to be demolished to make way for new apartments.
But the plans fell through and LIDL want to open a new store after buying the site. They hope to submit a planning application in February but will first open the idea up to public consultation and launch an open day.
The town is growing in size and still only has two Co-op supermarkets to cater for its population.
Labour councillors have consistently hampered the public’s choice of shopping facilities in Westhoughton. They said NO to plans for a Tesco on Manchester Road, yet only days after the store opened two Labour councillors were spotted in the store.
They opposed plans for the new Sainsbury’s store on Cricketers Way, potentially denying brand new facilities for our local cricket and rugby clubs, as well as losing money for Market Street footpath improvements.
They also:
- Cut the town’s market hall in HALF
- Opposed plans for a new clothing store
- Opposed plans for a new restaurant to replace a betting shop
- Said YES to 3 new estate agents, but only one was established because of the collapse in the housing market.
We’d like to know what you think about the plans for a LIDL store – will this be a good idea for Westhoughton? Post a comment on this news item or e-mail your views to focus@westhoughton-libdems.org.uk.

Lidl, what a joke!!!!!
As a local resident, i meet with Lidl repersenatives, they are not bothered about our views. Just want to take, take, take.
Well, i will be fighting for this to not go ahead!!! the plans are awfull, and imagine the traffic once the store is built at westhoughton most busy Juction (wigan road, Cricketers way , The Fairways and market street.)Oh and with sainsburys comming to cricketers way (200 yards from lidl site).. One word, TRAFFIC.
As for the store providing jobs, thats the only benifit. But to be honest imagine the job it will kill by clossing small indepentent stores in the area which we all have relied on for years.
Lidl are a joke, please if people reading this can do any think, dont lett it come to westhoughton..
WHO LIKES SITTING IN TRAFFIC!!!!!!
WHO WANTS A BIG GLOW IN THE DARK BUILDING!!!
WHO WANTS MORE TRUCKS IN WESTHOUGHTON!!
WHO WANTS LOCAL SHOP CLOSSING!!
WHO WANTS PAVILLIONS SQUARE TO HAVE NO COOP!!!!
WHO WANTS TO JUST PROFIT OUT OF A PREVIOUS SITE FOR THE LOCAL COMMUNITY MEMBERS CLUB!!
WHO WANTS TO SELL US CHEAP NASTY FOOD!!!!
ANSWER TO ABOVE, LIDL (selfish, profit wanting food superstore)
Been to Lidl Open day today.
Same feelings as b4, but to be honest i had a nice free bottle of water and choc bar.
So as promised,i will state the food is not cheap and Nasty as i first said.
I still dont want lidl, westhoughton can’t possibly need this development.
SAY NO TO LIDL
Superb Idea, Lidl is a quality store at reasonable prices, the local co-op is a joke, overpriced with ignarant , coukdnyt care less staff.
Lidl is most welcome, only short sighted bigots like Samuel Moss would doubt that this would be a boon to the working people of Westhoughton.
I hope that lidl and others like them get the go ahead for the store in westhoughton, traffic is awful in westhoughton, but if there was more choice wouldn’t we be able to walk to our local lidl and sainsburys?
In today’s financial climate we should be thinking more about jobs for local people, westhoughton is like a ghost town, with overpriced shops selling stuff no one wants like shoes from the 1970′s, and a lot of empty shops so if people have more choice and decent shops to choose from they will stay in westhoughton to do their shopping and maybe this will benefit local buisinesses, as for the traffic issue try walking once in a while or even buy a bike and get on it you will find the difference is great and you can normally manage to do a decent shop with a rucksack on your back and a basket on the front of your bike. Think of the money you will save in petrol, lidl by the way do great food at reasonable prices and the fruit and veg are great at 70% cheaper than the co-op. Have you ever done a big shop at the co-op? Most people go to middlebrook or leigh, lets keep our shops nearby where local people can benefit from the jobs they bring.
Well Said Mike,,,,,,First off my sight is fine, (not short sighted)
I have a great idea lets build this development next to your house, sure you would love the traffic, oh and across the road from your childrens school. Well at least you have some nice cheep food. Still think im a Bigot.
all this development brings is low price food, it employs like 2 people at time. (so cuts jobs)
Think people need to look benyond cheep food aspect..
Mr. Moss, I live 70 feet approx. away from the proposed development, and welcome it.
Preferable to the previous shady “club” that was an absolute shambles or the previous proposal for yet more overpriced poky flats that would remain unsold for years.
Having lived in Westhoughton all my life (51 years) and suffered the overpriced monopoly of the Co-Op, I think I know better than most of the newcomers what would benefit Westhoughton.
Cheaper groceries and healthy competition fron them is to be encouraged. It can only benefit the people of Westhoughton .
Best of luck to Lidl, Aldi, Netto or any of the budget retailers that decide to open stores in Westhoughton.
It’s ridiculous that this hasn’t happened sooner! I don’t know anyone who goes to co-op unless they have to, because it’s overpriced. Most people go to Tesco or Asda at Middlebrook, but if Lidl opened in Westhoughton, you’d have a new place you can WALK to, good prices, new jobs, and LESS TRAFFIC as everyone wont be flooding to Horwich to go to Middlebrook as much.
It’s better than the rubbish that’s there at the moment, that’s for sure! A drinking club, or a supermarket that has good value food for you to feed your family? Hmmm…
It’s people like Samuel Moss who have stopped Westhoughton stepping into the 21st century!
very true
Mike and tr wolf im sure you both work for Lidl….. nice pr stunt..
lol, god luck to you all, but to be honest if a Lidl is needed in westhougthon, Green fields is not the correct location, put it in town centre. increase footfall to the local shops, that makes more sense…
making a 21st centry westhougthon…
I dont work for Lidl, daft to say so and doubt my integrity.
Maybe *you* work for the Co-op or Sainsbury more like.
You have lost an argument, classic tactics of slurring your opponents.
Sad man.
I opposed to Sainsburies as i live “RIGHT AT THE BACK OF IT” In a private house, BUT nooooooo Everyone wanted a larger store, leading to MORE traffic, MORE Chaos, Road works, extra traffic lights and the inconvienance is not only on the roads but on our estate, The footpath Leading to the store will be right outside my house. I really don’t see what all the fuss is about Lidl, Sainsburies will cause a nightmare with traffic whether we have a Lidl or not
We signed a petition for sainsburies but Bolton Council made the final decision .
NO FREEDOM OF SPEECH in Westhoughton I’m afraid because the decision has already been made whether WE like it or not.
Oh i forfot I am actually looking forward to a Lidl.. Better priced than any other food store in westhoughton.
I am in favour of any new shopping outlet that gives the Co-op a run for its money. I have lived in Westhoughton for 9 yrs now and as a non driver have had no alternative but to shop at the Co-op (or pay a fiver a go to have shopping delivered from Middlebrook) I buy fresh veg/ meat etc from the small local shops but there are certain items you have to go to a supermarket for from a convenience point of view. I therefore welcome any new shopping outlet which prevents the Co-op from having the monopoly and helps those not having the luxury of parking their arse in a car just to go the corner!!!
At least Lidl is a Facilty and gives the people of Westhoughton a choice of shopping i’ve always found Lidl ,Adli to be good value for money so why should we have to go to Leigh or Horwich?
Besides whats the alternative? Even more empty apartments (flats) and further congestion on our already overcrowded roads.
I am in favour
Excellent news that the application was approved, work is progressing nicely.
We should have our store well before Christmas it seems.
At last a local alternative to the overpriced Coop monopoly ofthe last 60 years.
Despite the whinging of hypocritical residents occupying homes on what was Westhoughtons open fields.
As a lifelong resident of Westhoughton, we never wanted houses there either !
Lets see how you like it now.
i live in a small village in ireland, that had plenty of overpriced shops. LIDL moved in and brought all the prices down, i can assure u lidl commin to westhoughton will be the best thing for the locals!
I live in Westhoughton and my dad goes shopping there. The food is very cheap 4 cans of coke for £1.00 believe it or not. Soups for 39p, 2litres of coke 39p. Service is quick. I do recommend taking your own plastic bags though as they charge 3p for every plastic bag you get. I think its a good idea as they convince people to have there own carrier bags. Other than that great service and good quality food for the price
