Emergency bin service is ‘not good enough’

Emergency plans to collect waste from three sites in Westhoughton over the period of snow and ice have been condemned as ‘simply not good enough’.

Refuse collectors will be taking waste next Monday (11th January) from Bolton Road car park, La Scala car park and the Grey Man car park in order to ease the pressure on householders after the collection vehicles were unable to do their normal rounds.

The three sites will only, however, be open from 8am until 12noon – which has been blasted by Councillor David Wilkinson, who represents Westhoughton South.

Cllr Wilkinson said: “This is simply not good enough. These are very limited times, when many residents will be at work. I will be pressing the Labour council to ensure that all surplus rubbish is picked up, and not just left uncollected like it has been on many streets.”

“Whilst I support the council’s emergency plan, it needs to be extended. I am also worried about less able residents such as the elderly or disabled. How are they to be expected to get rid of their waste?”

To me this seems a bit ridiculous – forcing residents to walk across town with bags of rubbish, with the worsening ice and snow on the ground. The limited collection points are certainly not close enough for us to consider risking life and limb just so our rubbish will be collected. Driving the refuse trucks along main roads and stopping at the end of streets is surely a safer option than asking residents to drag bin-bags out across town.

Bolton Council have made no serious attempt to collect refuse – my road was probably not safe for the collection of refuse so I left my bin at the end of my road adjacent to a road that was completely clear of snow or ice – the council have advised me the bin wasn’t emptied because I hadn’t left it in it’s normal location – but also admitted they wouldn’t have emptied it if I had left it in the normal location – what exactly do we pay council tax for if they can’t be bothered to empty bins? – it’s now 5 weeks since my bin was emptied.
