Is ALDI coming to Westhoughton?

Greenfields Private Members ClubThe national supermarket chain ALDI are considering building a new supermarket on the site of Greenfields Private Members’ Club, according to press speculation.

The club, located at the junction of Wigan Road and Cricketers Way, was going to be demolished to make way for new apartments. (more…)

The much-needed car park was originally approved by Liberal Democrat ward councillor David Wilkinson in 2005 but the plans have been hit with delays since Labour took over the administration of the council. (more…)

Legal ping-pong causes fresh car park delays for Daisy Hill railway station

011.JPGPlans for a new car park for Daisy Hill railway station have been delayed AGAIN.

The new car park, which is desperately needed to alleviate pressure on Mabel Street, has become the centre of a legal ping-pong game between Labour-run Bolton Council and the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority (GMPTA).

The much-needed car park was originally approved by Liberal Democrat ward councillor David Wilkinson in 2005 but the plans have been hit with delays since Labour took over the administration of the council.

A legal dispute between Bolton Council and the GMPTA has been blamed. (more…)

Market cut in half

market.JPGThe market that was once the pride and joy of Westhoughton has been CUT IN HALF by Labour bosses.

Half of it has become the biggest store cupboard in town… and it comes with a hefty price tag of £120,000.

Under the latest plans by Labour town hall chiefs, half of the market is being used as storage space and it will still only open TWO days a week. (more…)

New street lights hailed a success

Elm RoadThe new street lighting on some of Westhoughton’s streets has been hailed a success by local councillors. After years of putting up with gloomy, yellow street lighting, residents finally saw the light at the end of the tunnel with a new lighting scheme.

New supermarket gets go-ahead

sainsburys_deli.jpgSupermarket giant Sainsbury’s plans for a £7.5 million store off Cricketer’s Way have been passed by Bolton Council. As part of their planned move, they will fund a state-of-the-art new ground which will be home to Westhoughton’s cricket and rugby league clubs.

The supermarket will create around 220 new jobs in the town.
