New year, new job: why not be Westhoughton’s new deputy town clerk?

If you’re super organised and community minded, you could be Westhoughton’s new deputy town clerk.

Westhoughton Town Council is advertising the new role until Friday 26 January at 12pm.

The Deputy Town Clerk will support the Town Clerk and oversee some community initiatives in Westhoughton.

The role includes assisting the Town Clerk with administrative functions, as well as developing and coordinating a programme to enhance community safety and security.

It is a part-time post of around 12 hours per week, with some flexibility on the working hours and the successful applicant will be expected to work mainly from an office (currently in Westhoughton Library). Attendance at some evening meetings and events at the weekends will be expected.

The pay band is £16.48 per hour to £19.11 per hour.

Interviews will take place on Saturday 24 February.

Key responsibilities

1. Assist the Town Clerk with administrative functions, ensuring the smooth operation of the town council, including supporting the Town Clerk in the administration of the Council finances.

2. Provide expert legal and governance advice to the council and assist in implementing council decisions, as required.

3. Support the formulation of overall policies and provide information to council members to facilitate effective decision-making, as needed.

4. Manage council records, attend meetings, and respond to correspondence on behalf of the council, under the guidance of the Town Clerk.

5. Collaborate with the local police to develop a programme which serves the community in increasing the security and safety of residents within Westhoughton.

6. Plan and organise community events to promote positive community engagement and boost participation.

7. Manage the council's computer systems, telephone, and office equipment, supporting enhancements and improvements.

Personal experience

Essential

A.) High standard of literacy and Numeracy (GCSEs or Equivalent)

B.) Have confidence to effectively deputise in the absence of the Town Clerk and deal professionally and effectively with Councillors and members of the public as well as members of other organisations and Councils

C.)Have experience and be able to confidently work with Microsoft programs

D.) Work efficiently alone or as part of a team

E.) Strong communication, interpersonal, and organisational skills

F.) Ability to work independently, prioritise tasks, and manage multiple projects at once

G.) Excellent organisational and record-keeping skills

H.) Ability to think critically and make sound decisions in a fast-paced environment

I.) Experience in community engagement and outreach is an asset

Desirable

J.) Knowledge of local government law and regulations, financial management, and data protection legislation

K.) The successful applicant may hold relevant qualifications already (ILCA, FILCA, CILCA), but should be willing to undertake necessary and relevant training.

L.) Knowledge of SAGE financial packages
